Rossanie Daudi Malolo, PhD Candidate (Environmental Health)

Rossanie Daudi Malolo is a Research Associate with over a decade of experience in public health research, with a particular focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and related health challenges across Schools, Communities, Markets, and Healthcare settings. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Environmental Health at MUBAS, focusing on adolescent participation in WASH interventions, Co-designing, behaviour change, and participatory approaches to improving public health outcomes with support from the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Improving Adolescent Health and Wellbeing in Malawi. She holds a Master of Public Health degree.

She has contributed to various WASH and public health research projects at WASHTED, including:

• Healthy Settings Research Project under the Scotland Chikwawa Health Initiative
• Impact of community-based WASH and food hygiene interventions on diarrhoeal disease in young children under the Sanitation and Hygiene Applied Research for Equity (SHARE) Consortium in Malawi
• Amplifying Local Voices to Reduce Failure in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector, in partnership with the University of Western Australia

She also contributed to WASH programmes at Self Help Africa (formerly United Purpose) through roles in Project Management and Monitoring, Evaluation, Knowledge Management, and Learning.

• Implementation of the Asset Management and Mapping Workstream under the Climate Justice Fund: Water Futures Programme.
• Sustainable, Accountable and Gender-Responsive Sanitation, Hygiene and Menstrual Hygiene Services for a Healthy Learning Environment for Adolescent Girls and Boys in Schools (Shasha Schools).
• Emergency WASH response and resilience-building initiatives in cholera-affected districts, including Rumphi, Mzimba North, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Dowa, and Zomba.
• Cyclone Freddy emergency response activities in Zomba, Mulanje, Thyolo, and Blantyre.

Rossanie is an alumna of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) Early Career Grants Programme, through which she led research on post-COVID-19 conditions among adults in Malawi. She also received the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Short Placement Award for Research Collaboration (SPARC), supporting her career development and research capacity-building at the University of Exeter.

She is currently also leading the Capacity building arm of the WASHTED Centre and contributing towards the Mainstreaming Gender Equality and Social Inclusion for a Just Energy Transition in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania Research within the Department of Public & Environmental Sciences at MUBAS.
