Every year on 28 May, the world marks Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) to raise awareness about menstrual health and advocate for dignity for all menstruating individuals. The 2026 theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” calls for collective action to ensure menstruation never becomes a barrier to education, health, or opportunity.
At WASHTED, we recognise that menstruation is a natural part of life, yet many girls and women still face challenges in managing it safely and comfortably. In settings like schools, workplaces, business places, Guardian Waiting Shelters (dormitory facilities for caregivers supporting hospitalised patients), among others; the lack of reliable water and soap, limited access to menstrual products, private sanitation facilities, hand-washing stations and appropriate waste disposal systems creates major barriers to safe menstrual hygiene management. Women are often forced to manage menstruation in overcrowded and inadequate environments that compromise their privacy, dignity, comfort and health.
Access to proper Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services is central to menstrual health. Availability of menstrual products, clean private toilets/changing rooms, water, soap, and safe disposal facilities help create environments where girls and women can manage menstruation with dignity and confidence.
Everyone has an important role to play in creating a period-friendly world. Open conversations, menstrual health education, and supportive environments can help break myths, reduce shame, and empower girls to participate fully in education and daily life.
This Menstrual Hygiene Day, WASHTED joins the global call to build a #PeriodFriendlyWorld, where no woman’s potential is limited by menstruation. Because periods should never stop progress.
