NIHR’s Adolescent Health and Wellbeing Project – Intervention Feasibility Study, Baseline Data Collection

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), through WASHTED, with funding from NIHR and in collaboration with KUHeS and the University of Strathclyde, is investigating the role of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in promoting adolescent health and well-being. As part of this initiative, baseline data collection is currently being conducted in Blantyre and Mchinji districts to inform an upcoming feasibility study.

The feasibility study will involve the implementation of school-based sanitation and hygiene interventions in selected schools, with the goal of improving the health, well-being, and learning environment of school-going adolescents. Findings from the baseline assessment will provide a benchmark against which post-intervention outcomes will be compared in both intervention and control schools, enabling the project team to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. Data collection commenced on 15 June 2026 and is expected to be completed by 26 June
2026.
