World Hand Hygiene Day 2026: Safer Care Starts with Clean Hands

This year’s World Hand Hygiene Day 2026 is themed “Action saves lives – Safer care starts with clean hands”

When we talk about safer care in health facilities, we often focus on health workers, but there is another critical group we must not overlook: guardians.

In Malawi’s district hospitals, guardians play a vital role. They cook, clean, and care for admitted patients, often staying in guardian waiting shelters for days or weeks. Yet, these shelters are frequently neglected, lacking adequate water, sanitation, and even basic handwashing facilities.

This means guardians are expected to provide care without the means to practice proper hygiene. Limited access to soap and water in these environments increases the risk of infections for both the guardian and the patient, undermining the care the health system is trying to provide.

Safer care must include everyone.

Clean hands should not stop at the ward, it must extend to guardian spaces as well.

WASHTED is currently conducting research in guardian waiting shelters across 27 districts in Malawi to better understand these challenges and advocate for improved sanitation and hygiene in these overlooked spaces.

As we commemorate this World Hand Hygiene Day, let’s broaden the conversation:

  • Clean hands save lives: but only when everyone has access.
  • Investing in hygiene for guardians is investing in safer care for patients.
