“Where water flows, equality grows.”
The center for Water, Sanitation, Health and appropriate Technology Development (WASHTED) joined the world in commemorating this year’s world water day which falls on 22 March. This year’s world water day themed “Water and Gender” was being celebrated with a slogan “Where water flows, equality grows” highlighting the relationship that exist between water access, and gender equality emphasizing how women and girls are often disproportionately affected by water insecurity. WASHTED together with Water for People, Water and Environmental Sanitation Network (WESNET) engaged the public through live discussion on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation in area of water access.
The television discussion highlighted the critical role of research in addressing water-related challenges and advancing equitable access to safe and clean water for all. During the program, WASHTED shared key findings and experiences from ongoing research in the water sector, emphasizing how evidence-based interventions can help improve access to water, strengthen community resilience, and promote gender equality. Furthermore, the discussion emphasized that unequal access to clean water continues to affect vulnerable population particularly women, children and rural communities. In this regard, research plays a pivotal role in identifying gaps in water supply systems, understanding community practices and challenges, and informing evidence-based policies and interventions that promote equity, inclusion and sustainable water management.
Through the engagement with MBC, WASHTED also encouraged communities, institutions, and policymakers to support initiatives that protect water resources and ensure that no one is left behind in accessing safe water.
Let us remember that water is not just about survival, it is about opportunity, dignity, and equality.
