This year’s 8th World One Health Congress (8WOHC) took place from September 20th to 23rd, 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa. The event brought together researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders from accross the globe to discuss major One Health challenges and exchange insights on research and policy developments.

Taonga Mwapasa, our research associate, gave an oral presentation on “Key Environmental Exposure Pathways of Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria in Southern Malawi.” Taonga’s presentation was part of the AMR: The One Health Drivers plenary session on September 20th, where she joined a panel of five presenters, including experts from Ghana, Zambia, South Africa, and China. The session focused on highlighting the major drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

In addition to its insightful plenary sessions, verbal presentations, and poster exhibits (see Conference schedule), the 8th World One Health Congress (8WOHC) proved to be an exceptional networking opportunity for researchers and policymakers in the field of One Health. The event brought together leading experts to discuss critical issues, such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), offering a unique platform for knowledge exchange.

One of the key takeaways from the conference was the importance of breaking down disciplinary
barriers in order to tackle the global AMR challenge effectively. The discussions underscored the need
for interdisciplinary collaborations across various levels, reinforcing the idea that a unified approach is
essential for progress.

If you’re passionate about One Health and addressing AMR, we highly recommend attending the
next One Health Congress.
